AMBROSE, STONG FINISH AT KANSAS SPEEDWAY
KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Marcos Ambrose had a brand new car to start Saturday's Kansas Lottery 300. He left with a lot more.
Ambrose started 16th at the Kansas Speedway and finished 11th to maintain his Top-10 position in the NASCAR Nationwide Series standings. More important, his JTG Daugherty Racing team came away with a lot of useful information for the future.
"We would have loved to have gotten a Top-10 finish out of it, but we got just a little bit tight after our last pit stop," Ambrose said. "But it was a strong day for us -- a strong weekend, really. We're trying to lock ourselves into the Top 10. If we continue to have runs like this, we'll make it."
Crew chief Gary Cogswell built a new car for the final two months of the season. Ambrose's No. 59 Kingsford Tailgate at Home Ford Fusion was part of the team's ongoing work toward the future.
"This was a new generation car for JTG Daugherty Racing," Cogswell said. "We take the things we learned from our older cars and create new cars for the future. We always thinking ahead, always working on a different generation of cars. This sport is too competitive to be content. Everything you do is for the future."
Ambrose, who now has a string of 15 Top 20 finishes in his last 16 starts, said the new generation of car not only provided a lot of answers; it provided considerable hope.
"We say this every week: We have to keep soldiering on and keep racing hard," he said. "We're going into some of these last races with a new car. I'm really pleased with the direction of this car. It's got a lot of potential. I feel like we raced well. It's been a strong weekend. We'll take what we learned here at Kansas, got back to the shop and improve on some things. It's a process that never ends."
Ambrose also won the WIX Filters mid race Leader Award.
We got a little lucky on the way the caution fell for us at the end of the race," Ambrose said. "We were planning to lead some laps anyway and then come in, but the caution worked out great. It's always cool to win the WIX Award."
