The 23-year-old second-generation racer – son of 2002 Daytona 500 winner Ward – has one win in the Camping World Truck Series, which came at Texas Motor Speedway in his 12th start on the tour.

In two full seasons in trucks, Burton scored one win, seven poles, seven top fives, 18 top 10s and finished a career-high fifth in his rookie year (2013).

Most recently, Burton struggled in the No. 26 BK Racing Toyota. Burton’s best finish was 27th last season at his home track — Martinsville Speedway.

Burton has limited experience in the XFINITY Series, making just two starts on the tour. He posted a respectable eighth-place finish at Kentucky Speedway in 2013 after qualifying eighth.

In 2014, Burton posted a 15th-place finish driving the No. 98 Ford.

Veteran crew chief Drew Blickensderfer will lead Burton’s effort at Richard Petty Motorsports. Blickensderfer has three wins including the 2009 Daytona 500.

He also worked as a tire changer for Burton's father Ward at Bill Davis Racing.
