Hornish gets the nod from Penske to run NASCAR Xfinity Series finale

Sam Hornish Jr., will drive the No. 22 Team Penske Ford in the Nov. 18 NASCAR Xfinity Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The team’s crew chief, Greg Erwin, confirmed to motorsport.com on Friday the Team Penske veteran will be behind the wheel, trying to cement a fourth owner's championship for the car number and team owner Roger Penske.

The No. 22 Ford currently leads the series by seven points over the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and by 47 points over the fifth-place team — the No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevy. The top four cars in the owner standings are eligible for the championship at Homestead.

The three-time IndyCar champ and five-time Xfinity Series winner picked up his most recent victory at his home track Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in August, driving the No. 22 Ford. In his last three starts at Homestead, Hornish has finished seventh, fourth and eighth. The 38-year-old Defiance, Ohio, native won the pole for the event in his last start (2013).

Five different drivers--Hornish, Brad Keselowski, Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano and Austin Cindric--have shared driving duties in the No. 22 this season. Hornish, Keselowski and Blaney have posted victories in the car.

Team Penske won NXS owner’s titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
