TOYOTA NASCAR Nationwide Series Test
Daytona International Speedway
January 18, 2008
MIKE WALLACE, No. 7 Geico Toyota Camry, Germain Racing
How did things go on your first day of testing in the Toyota Camry? "It was a pretty good first day with Germain Racing and the Toyota Camry. We're not setting the field on fire, but we're here to test and to learn as much as we can. We have a list of 33 things or so we have to go through for data, which we have to get answers for before we leave. We've singled in on just one car for single-car runs. Everything is going good so far -- we're just hoping for the rain to hold up so we can get a full three days of testing in."
Did you think last year that you would be driving a Toyota Camry in 2008? "I knew that after I saw the chassis dyno numbers after the Michigan race last year, I wanted to get the opportunity to drive a Camry. The Germain Racing team has great leadership. They have proven they can win a championship with Todd Bodine in the Craftsman Truck Series, and hopefully, we can parlay that into success in the Nationwide Series. I'm excited to get the season started. I really like the thought process of Toyota. We are just a single-car team, but we feel like we have teammates in other Toyotas, because of how we all work together."
Do you think stand-alone Nationwide Series teams can compete with the Cup Series affiliated teams? "I hope so. We are a stand-alone team. We want to run competitively and win races. We're counting on a lot of support from Toyota from a technical aspect. I feel very confident in my ability. Do I think I can beat Kevin Harvick? Sure, on the right day, with the right car and the right circumstances. We'll just have to wait and see. The motto on our team is 'Failure is not an option.' We're going to succeed one way or another. There's one winner each week and we want to be one of them one way or another."

How important is the communication between you and your new crew chief at this test? "I think the important thing is the feedback I can give him. At these tests, we can utilize telemetry on the cars, and it's important for my feedback to match up with what they're seeing on the computers with the engineers. Once we get into the season, and we can't use the telemetry, that communication is important into getting the right setups and the right changes from practice to qualifying to the race."
