Dakoda Armstrong to drive for Gibbs at Iowa this weekend
Dakoda Armstrong, who has been competing for JGL Racing this season, will get a new ride for Saturday night’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway.
Armstrong, 25, will fill in for Matt Tifft in Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 18 Toyota, Motorsport.com has learned. Tifft was originally scheduled to run the race but is recovering from recent brain surgery.
An official announcement of the move could come as early as Tuesday, sources said.
Armstrong will be stepping into a team that has been on fire of late – the No. 18 team has won four of the series’ past five races. That streak includes a victory at the first Iowa race with Sam Hornish Jr. and three consecutive wins with Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Busch.
Armstrong has struggled this season with JGL Racing and has yet to earn a Top 10 finish. His best finish is 12th at Daytona International Speedway in July and he is 15th in the series standings.
The native of New Castle, Ind., earned his best finish in national series competition in 2012 with a third-place finish in Trucks at Michigan International Speedway with ThorSport Racing.
