A late race punt of Michael Waltrip by Jason Leffler on the last lap, cleared the way for the No. 4 Ford of Mike Wallace to earn his first victory in almost ten years. Waltrip was leading the race when the second place car of Leffler slammed into the rear of the No. 99 Chevy sending Waltrip spinning in turn two.
That allowed Wallace to rocket from fifth to first, as he maneuvered around the No. 00 Dodge of Leffler and score his third victory at Daytona International Speedway.
The last few laps were just intense," said Wallace. "I got behind and I saw Leffler go up to block Junior," the winner said. "My car just turned good and I got out in front and stayed there. So many people doubted my ability. This is for all those doubters."
Leffler would have finished second, but NASCAR penalized him for rough driving, relegating him to a 13th place result.
Greg Biffle was then awarded the second place spot.
"It was a great run for us," said Biffle. "I am just glad we stayed out of all the trouble at the end."
Martin Truex, Jr., Robert Pressley, and Mike Bliss complete the top five.
Favorite to win the race, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finished a disappointing 17th. Earnhardt was attempting to get to the front, Leffler tried to block his advance, and in the melee; Earnhardt ended up in the wall.
"We were running up on the Double Zero," said Earnhardt. "I went to the outside and he just run us into the wall. Ain't no other way to put it. He took us out, crashed us, wrecked us whatever you call it. Tore my car and tore his car up and its disappointing. We had a good car. I had a run on him and we was going to race to the finish and neither one of us got to do that."
Truex leads series rankings by 68 points over Kyle Busch. Greg Biffle (- 327), Ron Hornaday (-381) and Bobby Hamilton, Jr. (-388) complete the top five.
