On Talladega: The upcoming "Touchstone Energy 300" at Talladega Superspeedway marks the second and final restrictor-plate race of 1999 for the NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division. Earlier this season at Daytona, Todd Bodine and the Phillips 66 Chevrolet were in contention for a win before an accident took out the Performance Team. Utilizing the draft and having a strong race car are key to winning on the superspeedways.
"Superspeedway racing tends to depend on the car and motor," Bodine said. "To run up front, you have to have a strong motor and good race car. The draft is extremely important. I have always been fortunate enough to draft well and be in the position to get solid finishes on the big tracks. We just have yet to put it all together to finish the day in victory lane."
Crew chief Donnie Richeson explained rules regarding shocks and springs make it necessary to build a solid race car and to have a strong motor.
"NASCAR controls the shocks and springs you can run on the superspeedways," Richeson said. "The rules require all teams run the same shocks and springs. There's a minimum you can run with the front spring and a minimum you can run with the rear spring. If you took every car in the race and dumped out their shocks and springs they would all be the same."
Equipment: The car Bodine will compete with this weekend in Talladega is "Busch Pig."
Two weeks ago In Bristol: Bodine posted his second straight fifth-place finish two weeks ago at Bristol Motor Speedway. In his eight NASCAR Busch Series starts this season Bodine has posted three top-five and five top-10 finishes and moved to seventh in the driver points standings.
"We really had a car capable of winning the race in Bristol," Bodine said. "I made a mistake and overadjusted the car. This Phillips 66 team pulled off some great pit stops and we got some good breaks in the race. We started in 38th and finished in fifth. We're catching up in this points battle. Top-five and top-10 finishes are what we have to keep doing if we're going to win this championship."
Bodine Favorite: Bodine's favorite hobby when he is not driving race cars is remote control racing.
