SHANE HMIEL IS A VICTIM OF "THE BIG ONE" EARLY AT TALLADEGA
TALLADEGA, AL (April 30, 2005) -- Saturday morning in Talladega, Alabama started off violently with thunderstorms rolling through the area, and it ended violently with the wreck-filled Aaron's 312 Busch series race.
After more than a 3-hour rain delay, the 43 car field took the green flag and yellow flag at the same time, to start the race under caution. The track was finally deemed race ready, and the field went full-speed on lap 9.
Shane Hmiel qualified the #32 WINFUEL Chevrolet in the 18th position during Thursday afternoon's qualifying session. In the early laps of the race, Hmiel quickly discovered that his WINFUEL Chevy was extremely fast in the draft and he began to move his way to the front. Unfortunately, on lap 17 the #32 WINFUEL Chevy was caught up in a huge 16-car wreck at the end of the frontstretch, going into turn 1.
"There was nothing I could do to avoid getting caught up in the wreck," a disappointed Hmiel explained. "I slowed down as much as I could, and I even had part of it missed, but it all happened right in front of me and I ended up getting knocked into the outside wall pretty hard."
"It's really disappointing to end up getting caught up in wrecks that weren't our fault two weeks in a row. This WINFUEL team has really taken a hit in the points in the last few weeks, which is terrible because they've given me really good cars, we just haven't been able to finish. I'm really looking forward to putting this all behind me and going to Darlington to try and change our luck."
Shane Hmiel has a double date with "The Lady in Black" this coming weekend as he competes in both the Busch and Nextel Cup series races at Darlington Raceway. Live coverage of the Diamond Wood Plywood 200 Busch series race begins Friday night on FX at 7:30 p.m. EST. Saturday night coverage of the Dodge Charger 500 Nextel Cup series race begins live on Fox at 7:00 p.m. EST.
