Nemechek Grabs Pole for Saturday's Birmingham Auto Dealers EasyCare 500K

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Joe Nemechek led 43 cars in Busch Pole Award Qualifying Thursday at Talladega Superspeedway for Saturday's Birmingham Automobile Dealers 500k presented by EasyCare. Nemechek, breaking his own track record, toured the 2.66-mile high-banked facility in 49.484 seconds, an average speed of 193.517 mph. The top 25 positions were secured in Thursday's qualifying with the rest of the starting order being determined in Busch Beer Second-Round Qualifying tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. NASCAR Busch Series rookie and second-fastest qualifier Tim Steele was clocked just a tick off of the pace at 49.671 seconds, an average speed of 192.789 mph, while third-fastest qualifier Phil Parsons posted a time of 49.688 seconds, an average speed of 192.723 mph. Thursday's pole was his seventh career and the second in a row for Nemechek at Talladega's Busch Series event. "Here at Talladega you've got to figure how to get your car through the air and have good horsepower, it seems like everything comes into play here," said Nemechek. "We lost a pole a year ago at Daytona because we didn't give it everything we had, but we gave it everything we had today," said Nemechek. "We need to win a race here, its been a while since we've won. "We were on the pole here last year, but we came up a lap or two short, Greg Sacks passed me there at the end. This year, I think we're going to be stout, I know we've got a heck of a race car." Rounding out the top were ten were Todd Bodine (192.657 mph), Mike McLaughlin (192.351 mph), Dick Trickle (192.085 mph), Elliott Sadler (191.785 mph), Tracy Leslie (191.708 mph), Jeff Green (191.608 mph) and Mike Dillon (190.932 mph). Along with Busch Beer Second-Round Qualifying, the stars of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series take to the Speedway tomorrow for Busch Pole Award Qualifying for Sunday's Winston 500 at 3 p.m. The Birmingham Automobile Dealers 500K presented by EasyCare NASCAR Busch Series race gets the green flag Saturday at 12 Noon (CDT). The Winston 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race is set for a 12 Noon (CDT) start on Sunday, with Jeff Gordon attempting to secure a $100,000 bonus for capturing the second leg of the Winston Million. Gordon won the first leg of The Winston Million with a victory in the season-opening Daytona 500. -- 30 -- MEDIA CONTACT: Speedway PR, (205) 761-4705
