HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Nov. 3, 2000) -- Homestead-Miami Speedway will recognize the achievements of seven outstanding Miami-Dade County students and teachers by naming them Grand Marshals for the November 11 Miami 300 during the Pennzoil 400 weekend.
Students Nathaniel Spiner, Eric Seibert, Joel Salinas and Denise Diaz, along with teachers Cynthia Cato and Ginny Calehuff and principal Dr. George Ellis, will give the famed command "Gentlemen, start your engines," for the Miami 300, the final race of the 2000 NASCAR Busch Series, at 1:10 p.m. Saturday.
"Homestead-Miami Speedway takes great pride in recognizing the achievements of the students and teachers in our school system," said Curtis Gray, President of Homestead-Miami Speedway. "We think it is appropriate to reward the hard work and accomplishments of these individuals, and to spotlight the many fine schools in our area." The Greater Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce recognizes students and teachers of each quarter of the school year, in addition to the students of the year. Gray is a member of the Chamber's Education Committee, and has been instrumental in the implementation of the "Rev It Up" NASCAR-themed curriculum, which is being incorporated within the South Dade schools.
The Elementary School Student of the Year is Spiner, of Airbase Elementary School. The Middle School Student of the Year is Seibert, a student at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Homestead. The High School Student of the year is Salinas, a student at Miami Southridge High School. Diaz, of the South Dade Skill Center, is the Adult Student of the Year.
The Teachers of the Quarter are Cato, of South Dade High School, and Calehutt, of the Robert Morgan Vocational Technical School. Dr. Ellis, the Principal of South Dade High School, was the Principal of the Year for Region VI, Miami-Dade County Schools.
Also accompanying the students to the pre-race presentations will be Kamela Patton, the Direction of Region VI Operations for Miami-Dade County Schools, and Barbara Huber, the Chamber's Chairman of the Education Committee.
