SHELL PONTIAC TEAM MOVING AT THE SPEED OF LIFE TO GEORGIA TONY STEWART READY FOR CHALLENGE OF ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY

HAMPTON, GA --.

As the Shell Race Team heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Stihl 300, "consistency in qualifying and finishing is our primary goal for 1998,"” said Stewart. " “Starting position and maintaining good track position are so important in earning a good finish. If we don'’t qualify toward the front of the field, it increases the chances of getting caught in early race accidents."

"“Although the only race I have driven at Atlanta Motor Speedway was on the old configuration, we tested extensively earlier this year on the new track,” states Stewart. “The results of that testing gave us confidence we have the necessary ingredients for a solid qualifying run this weekend. We are all dedicated to working on the basic principles of a good race team; concentration and attention to detail. Joe Gibbs gives us constant inspiration to attain our goals and Shell provides the example of how to achieve success through communication. I gain more experience at each race which improves my ability to communicate with the crew. We have a winning combination and are ready to turn the corner and bring home our first NASCAR Busch win."”

SHELL DRIVER QUOTES: Tony Stewart “The only time I raced at Atlanta was in November, 1996, on the old configuration. We tested the Shell Pontiac on the new track extensively this year and were very pleased with the results. I am confident we will be in position to qualify and race well.

“Starting position and maintaining good track position are so important in earning a good finish. If we don’t qualify toward the front, it increases the chances of getting caught in early race accidents.

`“Our season has not had the consistency we would have liked through the first three races. I know a big part is due to my inexperience in the NASCAR Busch cars. We have a great car owner in Joe Gibbs and as well as a great crew and crew chief. We all work together very well as a team. Shell is a tremendous sponsor and continues to support our efforts in every way. We are looking to Atlanta to turn things around.”
