Miller Has New Career-Best; Finishes Sixth
MADISON, Ill. (Aug. 1) -- REESE'S Racing driver Brandon Miller continues to soar forward in his career development, evidenced by a sixth-place finish Saturday night at Gateway International Raceway.
"The REESE'S Chevrolet was really fast all race," Miller said. "The No. 21 Chevy was a little tight at the beginning of the race, but we made some really good adjustments on the car during the race, and by the end we were just as fast as the leaders. My crew also had a really good night in the pits and they made some heads-up calls to help me stay near the front."
It was another career night for the Miller, and it began with qualifying. Miller qualified the REESE'S Chevy in the fifth spot with a speed of 133.852 mph (33.538 sec.). This was Miller's best qualifying effort to date.
At the drop of the green flag, Miller lost a few spots, but he remained focused and stayed inside the top-10 until his first pit stop on lap 31 of 200. During the pit stop, the REESE'S crew made some minor adjustments to help with a tight-handling race car, changed four tires and filled it with fuel. Miller returned to the race track in the 11th spot. Miller remained in the bottom half of the top-20 until lap 91 when crew chief Viers made a call on pit road for two right side tires. This call boosted Miller into the sixth spot.
Reed Sorenson won the evening event at Gateway International Raceway, and Mike Wallace finished second. Carl Edwards finished third, David Green finished fourth and Paul Menard finished fifth.
Despite dropping to fifth from fourth in the team standings, Miller still beat Martin Truex Jr. (26th), so the REESE'S Racing team continues to cut the gap between it and Truex's team (198 points).
Harvick's teammate, Clint Bowyer, finished eighth. Bowyer is second in the driver standings, 70 points short of Truex's series-leading total.
Miller and the REESE'S Racing team will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 6, at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The TNT television network will begin its coverage at 8:30 p.m. EDT. MRN will produce the live radio broadcast.
