CHARLOTTE, N.C., (March 27, 2001) - Phoenix Racing owner James Finch has announced today that Winston Cup driver Jimmy Spencer will pilot the #1 Yellow Racing machine for 18 NASCAR Busch Grand National Series events this season starting with Saturday's Jani-King 300 at Texas Motor Speedway.
"Jimmy brings a ton of experience to the table," said Finch. "Everyone saw how well he's been driving these past two weeks, and that's because of all the laps Jimmy has in these kinds of race cars. Using a Winston Cup driver this year is like bringing in a pitcher from the N.Y. Yankees to pitch for the Charlotte Knights (a North Carolina-based minor league baseball team). There is a definite advantage.
"It's all about experience," added Finch. "We hope to win some races, that's what this is all about. Our goal is to put that #1 Yellow race car in victory lane each week for our team and the sponsor who supports us. Winning takes care of everything."
All of Spencer's 18 Busch races accompany Winston Cup dates. Finch also announced that Bobby Hamilton, driver of the #55 Winston Cup ride, will take the driver seat of the #1 race car for the Nashville 300 at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway. A driver for the remaining eight races on the Busch Series schedule will be announced at a later date.
"Bobby offered his services because it is his hometown and it's a new track," said Finch. "I think it is a good deal for both Phoenix Racing and Yellow to put an experienced, enthusiastic driver in the seat of our race car.
"We have had competitive race cars the past two weeks," referred Finch to Spencer's previous two performances as an interim driver of the #1 Yellow race car at Darlington (S.C.) and Bristol (Tenn.). "The final statistics just haven't told that tale. We got into an unavoidable wreck at Darlington that knocked the alignment out of the race car. We had a real strong run last week until a motor let go. Once we get it together, that #1 Yellow race car is going to take the checkered flag this season."
