For the second time in their NASCAR Busch Series career, Mark Green and the Timber Wolf/Brewco Motorsports team are competing at the South Boston Speedway. The 0.400 mile oval is only the fifth of the first 16 tracks of the 1997 season on which they have competed previously. Green is piloting the No. 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolet Monte Carlo named 'Ol' Blue', the same car he raced in last season's event at South Boston. The car is the original race car built by Brewco Motorsports and its first paint scheme was solid blue, hence the name. It was rebuilt during the off-season and made its 1997 debut at the New Hampshire International Speedway in May.

Ray Rich, of Columbia, Tennessee, is an honorary member of the Timber Wolf/Brewco Motorsports team for the South Boston 300. Rich has spent much of his career as an assistant basketball coach for several universities, including University of Richmond, Middle Tennessee State University and University of Chattanooga. He also has experience coaching high school football. In addition to his coaching duties, Rich writes a motorsports column for the Daily Herald (Columbia, Tennessee).

Express Mart, headquartered in Chatham, Virginia, is an associate sponsor on the No. 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolet Monte Carlo for the South Boston 300 at South Boston Speedway. The convenience store chain has 26 locations in Virginia.
