Sister keeps eye on her brother as he races.

MOORESVILLE, NC-- The No. 44 FanZCarTM Busch Series team has something no other team has, a full-time female spotter. Denise Mixon is not only driver Mike Harmon's spotter; she is also his sister.

Harmon jokes that she needs glasses, but understands her importance to his success. "Sometimes I have to remind her to just spot, and leave the driving to me," Harmon quips with a smile.

Mixon started out as a scorer, before the days of required spotters. "In the beginning, the crew chiefs used to spot for the drivers. But sometimes I could see what was going on better than they could, so I started telling him what was happening."

Since she was spotting even before NASCAR required it, when officials did make it a rule she just kept on doing it. "In the beginning there were a few other women who used to score and then spot. But when NASCAR made it a rule, most of the teams hired somebody to do it, but I just kept on."

Being the only woman, Mixon has had to fend for herself at times. "At first, they weren't too sure what to make of me, being the only women. But now they just think of me as one of the guys," she says of the other spotters.
