SHANE HUFFMAN TO JOIN RWI RACING
--Addition of Former Driving Champion Highlights Team's Latest Competition Staff Enhancements--
MOORESVILLE, NC (September 19, 2007)--Officials of RWI Racing, LLC announced today the hiring of former NASCAR Busch Series driver and USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series National Champion, Shane Huffman, as car chief for the team's No. 66 Dodge, driven by Steve Wallace. Huffman will begin working with the organization immediately and will travel with the No. 66 team to this weekend's Busch Series event in Dover, DE.
During his driving career, Huffman became a legend on the southern short-track scene, amassing a formidable record in the ever-tough USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series. Running either full or partial schedules for six seasons, Huffman earned 28 victories and 25 pole positions during his USAR career. He was crowned the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series National Champion in 2003. After moving to the NASCAR Busch Series in the final 1/3 of the 2006 season, Huffman showed that he had the talent to get the job done in racing's big leagues as well. He garnered two top-five and six top-ten finishes in 28 career starts for Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s JR Motorsports operation.
"I'm really looking forward to this next chapter in my career. I've built and worked on race cars my entire life and I've always prided myself in my ability to do that. I've raced with Steve Wallace for quite a while now--through the Busch Series and Pro Cup--and I know that he has the natural talent and car control to win races in NASCAR. I'm excited about the opportunity to take what I've learned over the years and combine it with Steve's potential behind the wheel. I can't wait to get started," Huffman stated.
Noted Steve Wallace, "Shane and I have been good friends for a long time now and he's someone that I really respect as a racing driver. He's incredibly smart with chassis setup, so he's going to be a huge boost to our team in that area. I really think that he's going to be an enormous help during the races too. There are a lot of times when you're on the track and you're feeling something that you just can't seem to explain correctly to the guys in the pits. Having someone on the pit box who has been there and felt what I'm feeling, like Shane has, is going to give us an advantage."
In a separate, yet related move, RWI Racing officials also named veteran fabricator, Nick Steger, as head of the team's expanding fabrication department. For 2008 and beyond, the team plans on taking the majority of its race car body fabrication in-house, a process which Steger will oversee. Prior to joining RWI Racing, Steger enjoyed a seven-year career at Hendrick Motorsports, where he helped Brian Vickers earn the team's first Busch Series championship in 2003. Following his time at Hendrick, Steger joined Ginn Racing for nearly a year and a half, before moving to the RWI Racing organization.
Noted RWI Racing team owner, Rusty Wallace, "Our new General Manager, Rick Carpenter, has done a tremendous job of finding very talented people to join our organization and I'm really excited about the latest additions to our lineup. Shane Huffman is a world-class racing driver and will undoubtedly add a whole new dimension to our team's operations. Just like I was during my career, Shane is really hands-on with the chassis and knows a race car inside and out. He and Steve really get along well and I know that he will be an enormous asset to our organization. We're dedicated to putting our race cars up front where they belong and in line with that, we're really ramping up our fabrication department. We've built a brand new fabrication facility and are taking most of our body fabrication in-house. Nick Steger will do a great job leading the expansion of that department. He comes with an exceptional record and has worked with some of the best in the business."
