FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES ALLTEL 20 February 20, 1999 North Carolina Speedway
MARK MARTIN -60- Winn Dixie Taurus -- "That backstretch pit stall kind of hurt us at the end, but that's probably all we could do. I bet we couldn't beat Jeff anyway, but it kind of took our chance away of having a shot there. It was an awesome run for the Winn Dixie team and our car worked well there at the end."
YOU HAD TO PACE YOURSELF DIDN'T YOU STARTING SO FAR BACK? "We were off a little bit at the beginning of the race, but right there at the end we had her working pretty good, so I'm just happy with the run and happy Jeff won."
JEFF BURTON -9- Track Gear Taurus -- "I'm real proud of the Track Gear guys. This is the car on the first lap in practice at Homestead that I drove in the wall. We had to put a right side frame rail and front snout, we totally re-did the car, so I'm awfully proud of those guys after doing all that work and being able to build it to be as competitive as it was. I'm proud of the Winn Dixie guys too. This is really our first race, we don't count Daytona, of being together in one shop and to come home first and second is a really big deal for us."
DID YOU ADJUST THE CAR A LOT DURING THE RACE? "We did. We kept getting tight. We were really tight that last run and, if the 60 car would have been in the right position, he would have made it hard on us. The longer I ran the tighter I got. We kept freeing it up, but I never did get it freed up enough and I saw a lot of people with the same problem. I don't know if it's because it's so cool or what it is, but it was awfully tight."
DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING FOR TOMORROW? "Well, I hope so. The Busch cars have quite a bit less horsepower than a Winston Cup car, so you really have to take that into account. There's a shorter wheel base in the Busch car. If the Exide car will run as good as the Track Gear car, we're gonna be awfully happy with it."
YOU MADE SOME PRETTY BIG ADJUSTMENTS DURING THE PIT STOPS DIDN'T YOU? "It was fast, but it wasn't fast enough. I've learned with these Busch cars you have to make huge changes to get results out of them, so we made some really big changes and saw some good results for it. Again, that's Tommy Morgan and everybody reminding me of the things that we need to do and I'm really proud of those guys. I really mean it, they are the best in the Busch Series."
YOU AND MARK WORKED TOGETHER TO GET THROUGH THE FIELD. HOW MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE IS IT DOING IT HERE VS. DAYTONA? "It makes a difference because I had a guy behind me that I knew no matter where I went he was gonna go. I never had to look in my mirror, just pay attention to the guys in front of me. That's a big advantage not having to drive in your mirror, just being able to drive out of your windshield and that is a big help."
