NASCAR Busch Series Teams Test at Richmond
* Over 40 drivers scheduled to participate in third of four NASCAR Busch Series test sessions
* 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. schedule allows for testing under the lights at Richmond International Raceway
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 27, 2006) -- The third test session of the season for the NASCAR Busch Series is a first for Richmond International Raceway where the 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. schedule Tuesday through Thursday allows for testing under the lights at the three-quarters of a mile track.
This year, NASCAR has set a schedule for when and where each of its national series may test at tracks that host NASCAR events. Those tests will be the teams' only opportunities to test at those tracks. Richmond is one of four tracks -- and the only short track -- that NASCAR Busch Series teams can utilize for tests this season. Daytona International Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway have already held tests. Lowe's Motor Speedway will host the series May 8 -- 10.
"This will provide valuable information for the teams," said NASCAR Busch Series Director Joe Balash. "The teams had an opportunity to select what tracks they wanted to test at in 2006 and Richmond was chosen because of the amount of information they could gather for their short-track programs.
"The opportunity to test under the lights enables the teams to experience the track under a number of track conditions. It also gives the fans a great opportunity to stop by after work to watch the NASCAR Busch Series cars in action."
Forty-one drivers are scheduled to participate in the three-day session where teams select two of the three available days to test.
Nine drivers who are scheduled to test represent 13 of 44 NASCAR Busch Series wins at Richmond, one of seven tracks the series has raced at since its inception in 1982. This year represents "25 Seasons Running" for the NASCAR Busch Series with series sponsor Anheuser-Busch.
Kenny Wallace (No. 22 AutoZone Ford) leads all drivers at the test session with three career wins at Richmond. Kevin Harvick -- the series points leader and 2001 champion -- and Jeff Burton, who share time in the No. 21 U.S. Coast Guard Chevrolet, each have won twice at Richmond. Harvick won the fall race there last year. Carl Edwards (No. 60 Ameriquest Ford) is the defending race winner of the Funai 250. He edged Elliott Sadler (No. 90 CitiFinancial Ford) last May by .144-second.
Denny Hamlin (No. 20 Rockwell Automation Chevrolet -- third), Edwards (fifth) and Jon Wood (No. 47 Clorox/American Red Cross Ford -- eighth) join Harvick as drivers ranked in the NASCAR Busch Series top 10 following the sixth race of the season. Five others in the top 10 -- J.J. Yeley (No. 18 Vigoro/Home Depot Chevrolet -- second), Clint Bowyer (No. 2 ACDelco Chevrolet -- fourth), Johnny Sauter (No. 00 Yellow Transportation Chevrolet -- sixth), Burney Lamar (No. 77 Dollar General Chevrolet -- seventh) and Jason Leffler (No. 32 ABF U-Pack Chevrolet -- ninth) -- are also scheduled to test at Richmond.
Kyle Busch (No. 5 Lowe's Chevrolet), who captured his first NASCAR Busch Series win at Richmond in 2004 and comes off a snowy win at Bristol last Saturday, will participate in the test. Martin Truex Jr. (No. 8 Dale Earnhardt Inc. Chevrolet), the two-time series champion, who was "discovered" by his current NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. as a result of a test at Richmond, is also slated.
