Autolite Platinum 250 Friday Quotebook RICHMOND, Va. (Sept. 11, 1998) Selected quotes following the Autolite Platinum 250 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race at Richmond International Raceway::
DALE EARNHARDT JR. No. 3 ACDelco Chevrolet "We've had some good runs. This had to be one of the few where we've had a real dominant car. We tried to stay out of trouble. The only trouble we had was gettting into pit road down there. We knocked the valance off coming through that hole. We've got to keep these guys at work. We've got a lot of testing coming up have some long weeks ahead of us. We needed to get this win because it's getting ready to get real tough. I don't think we changed too much (during the race. We made a few minor adjustments maybe, but no more than a half a pound (of air here and there. I think if we keep this up we've got a great shot at winning the points. We led the most laps, got the bonus points and have got to get up there and lead again. I had the wick up since they dropped the first green flag."
JEFF BURTON Track Gear Ford #9, finished 3rd "We were so far off that we were racing for second, not for first, and we surely want to be more competitive to win these things. We were terrible. I hate to admit that, but that's the worst the Track Gear Ford done all year -- it just pushed real bad in the middle all night, and we couldn't fix it. But I'm real proud of my guys because we took a car that was a 15th or 20th place car and finished second with it, and I'm real proud of the changes they made during the race, and I thought we got everything out of it we possibly could have."
JIMMY SPENCER No. 12 Zippo Chevrolet "We had absolutely nothing for the 3 car. It tended to get a little looser on the longer runs. It just wasn't good enough to beat him Earnhardt Jr.. We kept adjusting on the car a lot and finally got it pretty good, but, then, I burnt up the tires. This is my first time at Richmond in a Busch car in a couple of years and you just can't come in here like that and beat these guys, it's awful hard to do so."
MATT KENSETH No. 17 Lycos Chevrolet "I guess I tried a little too hard there. We had a real good race car. I keep putting my guys behind every single week. I qualified terrible again this weekend, and the first lap people were three wide and knocked my fenders in, and I had to basically start 40th tonight and work our way all the way back up, and should have finished second if I wouldn't have run into the wall all by myself. The guys did a great job. The Reiser Enterprises team is number one; they just need to get the driver tuned up a little bit."
TODD BODINE No. 30 Slim Jim Chevrolet "We've done awful well on these short-tracks this season and that's hard to do where there's so much action and so much competition, so, that speaks well of this team. We were doing all we could do to hang on to a top-five tonight. There were a lot of good cars running pretty close together there at the end, all wanting the same space. I thought we'd had it when the 17 Kenseth bounced off the wall, trying to pass the 12 car Spencer."
MIKE McLAUGHLIN No. 34 Goulds Pumps Chevrolet "As far as I'm concerned this is the worst thing about racing when you just ride around out there. The points is what makes you do it but it is difficult when you spend your whole night looking in your mirror trying to stay out of everyone's way"
RANDY LaJOIE No. 74 FINA Chevrolet "Teamwork is what wins and loses championships, and right now we are losing it, but not by lack of effort referring to his team completely rebuilding the front end of the car in order to get him back on the track."
