Richmond, VA (Sep. 2, 2002) -- Ashton Lewis, Jr. and the Civil Air Patrol Chevrolet racing team are excited about returning to Richmond International Raceway. Earlier this year, Lewis had his career best finish, a second place, at Richmond. The team would like to do better than that, and take home the trophy, in the upcoming Funai 250.
Going to a track that a team has performed well at adds a bit of excitement to the weekend.
"I don't think there's much added pressure this weekend, we just expect to do well. Unfortunately, we have to take a different car there. It's a good car, it's the car we ran at Michigan so we've run it before, we will just have to take what we learned in the spring race and apply it to this car. We have high expectations," Lewis said.
Richmond International Raceway is the home track for Lewis, who is from Chesapeake, Virginia. This too, adds excitement to the weekend for the team.
"It's really exciting to race in front of the Richmond fans since this is our home track. That's kind of what's been so frustrating for us in the past. We always put so much effort into it, and always want to do well there. It felt really good for everything to come together and get a good finish in front of our fans."
It is important for every team to have a good strategy for each track. What is the strategy for the Civil Air Patrol Chevrolet racing team this weekend?
"We will divide our first practice session about half and half (between qualifying setup and race trim). In the spring race this year, we were seventh fastest in practice in our qualifying setup, and given the chance to qualify we were expecting to be in the top ten. It was a disadvantage for us to have to start by points for that race."
One last thought from Lewis, "We know we have both packages, now we just need to go there and execute."
Qualifying for the Funai 250 will take place at 3:00 ET on Thursday, September 5th. The race will be aired live September 6th on TNT and MRN at 8:00 pm ET. The next event is the MBNA.com 200 at Dover Downs International Speedway on Saturday, September 21, 2002.
