Smith Strong in Phoenix Busch Race, Posts Eighth-Place Finish
PHOENIX (April 20, 2007)-- Regan Smith started Friday night's NASCAR Busch Series event from the fifth position and never fell out of the top 10 on his way to posting an eighth-place result at Phoenix International Raceway.
Of the top-12 finishers in the Bashas' Supermarket 200, Smith was the only driver who is not a regular in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.
Before joining Ginn Racing for the 2007 season, Smith had one top-10 finish in 85 Busch starts. The 23-year-old driver has now earned three top 10s in the first nine races of the season. In addition to his eighth place finish on Phoenix's one-mile oval, he posted a ninth-place result in California (Feb. 24) and a career-high fifth at Nashville Superspeedway (April 7).
"We've had a strong team all year," said Smith, who moved up two spots to 11th in the Busch Series driver point standings. "Had it not been for a couple of unnecessary accidents, we would have captured more top 10s."
"Phoenix hasn't been one of my best tracks, so to come here in our Shea Homes Chevrolet and have such a strong race is pretty cool." added Smith.
"Everyone did a great job working hard all night and all weekend," said crew chief Doug Randolph. "We had excellent pit stops and Regan did a great job getting around the track. If we can keep rattling off these top-10 finishes, we'll be in good shape."
The next chance the No. 4 team will get will be at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
