IS SUCCESS MEASURED BY WINNING THE MANUFACTURER OR DRIVER CHAMPIONSHIP?
"We're happy to win the NASCAR Manufacturer's Championship, no question about it. But the primary focus for everyone is the driver's championship. We want to win the team title. We like the driver's championship. It's the same for Winston Cup and all of the series that we participate in. The fan identifies and connects with the driver first, and the connection to the manufacturer is secondary. So while we are making an effort in both areas - we want to win both - we certainly want to make sure that we wrap up the driver's championship."
WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MANUFACTURER'S CHAMPIONSHIP TO FORD?
"It provides a tremendous amount of personal pride within the company and among all of us who work on the program. It is important to us. It demonstrates the capability within Ford to design and development a race car that is the best car out there in the most competitive form of racing in the country, if not the world."
THERE IS ONLY A HANDFUL OF FULL-TIME FORD TEAMS IN THE BUSCH SERIES. DOES FORD TAKE A QUALITY OVER QUANTITY APPROACH IN THE BUSCH SERIES?
"I think that's where it demonstrates that it isn't the number of people running your equipment, but the quality of the equipment itself that determines whether you can win a manufacturer's championship or not. We have only a handful of teams running our equipment in the Busch Series and yet we're able to win the manufacturer's championship. Again, that just shows the quality of the equipment along with the quality of the teams."
WITH TWO FORD DRIVERS CONTENDING FOR THE DRIVER'S CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR, IS THERE A SYNERGISTIC EFFECT WHEN A MANUFACTURER CAN WIN BOTH TITLES?
"By contrast last year, I sat through the longest banquet of my life at the Winston Cup banquet where we really didn't have much success at all. I think that the Busch banquet is going to be a lot of fun having swept the series with both the manufacturer's championship and the driver's championship. I'm looking forward to that one."
THIS MARKS THE FIRST TIME THAT THE TAURUS HAS WON BOTH THE BUSCH SERIES AND WINSTON CUP SERIES MANUFACTURER TITLES. HOW SIMILAR ARE THE TWO CARS?
"The cars are very similar. The wheelbase is different, but the majority of the templates are identical. The controls that NASCAR is putting on the Winston Cup templates are closer to the controls that they have had on the Busch templates for many years. The long template on the Cup car and the Busch car are the same. It's still the same car. With the wheelbase being different, there are some dissimilarities on the chassis obviously, and the firewall position and so forth are different, but the shapes are the same."
