SPARTANBURG, SC (October 29, 2003) -- The goblins and jack-o-lanterns will be out in full force in the arid desert plains of Phoenix, AZ for the running of the Basha's Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. There will be frightening costumes, spooky decorations everywhere, and a race car decked out in the seasonal colors of orange and black, but driver David Stremme does not scare easily. With his outgoing personality, he will probably make friends with most of the witches and warlocks he crosses paths with this Halloween weekend.
Phoenix is a 1.0 mile oval, which fits Stremme's driving style perfectly. In the tracks that Stremme has raced on this season that are between .75 and 1.33 miles, his average starting position is 12.0 and his average finish is 11.6. He is very focused on his racing, and he won't let anything distract him from his newest goal.
"If I perform well this weekend, I could take over the points lead in the Raybestos Rookie-of-the-Year competition," Stremme said. "Right now I'm only six points behind Coy Gibbs, the current leader."
Stremme is not the only one looking for strong performance this weekend. Car Chief Jon Wolfe said, "This team has really performed well at Phoenix in the past. Last year we started the race in 7th and finished in 6th. In 2001 we sat on the pole. That's not a bad record, and it shows we know what it takes to get a car around this place. We're going to give David a good car and let him do what he does best - drive the heck out of it."
The Basha's Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway will be held on Saturday, November 1. The race will be aired live on TNT and be broadcast live on PRN beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT. Qualifying for the event will take place Thursday, October 30 at 3:35 p.m. EDT and will be aired on the Speed Channel.
