MAGIC SHOES READY FOR ACTION AT THE MAGIC MILE
CHARLOTTE, NC-Anytime Goulds Pumps Busch Grand National driver, Mike "Magic Shoes" McLaughlin gets the opportunity to race at New Hampshire International Speedway it puts a smile on his face and gets the adrenaline pumping in his body. McLaughlin, a native of Waterloo, NY, will be looking to become the first ever Busch Grand National repeat winner at the 1-mile oval in Loudon, New Hampshire on May 8th.
Over his driving career, New Hampshire International Speedway is the one track that has really helped to raise McLaughlin's driving stock. Some of McLaughlin's greatest moments have occurred at New Hampshire International Speedway. In 1990, Magic Shoes claimed two checkered flags in one day, winning a Busch North and a NASCAR modified race. McLaughlin also won the Busch Series race at NHIS in 1997. All totaled, McLaughlin is the second leading all-time winner at NHIS with six wins. A win in this years Busch race would tie McLaughlin with his friend Mike Stefanik for first. McLaughlin has recorded 6 top-ten finishes at NHIS in 12 Busch Series starts.
"New Hampshire holds a special place in my heart," McLaughlin said. "It has been an awesome race track for me in the past and hopefully this year will be the same. I always get to see a lot of friends when we race there and I am looking forward to seeing a bunch of them this year."
McLaughlin knows his Goulds Pumps Racing Team will have to be in top form to claim the checkered flag. The competition level in the Busch Series is at an all-time high in 1999. After finishing the 1998 season in third place in the Busch Grand National points race, McLaughlin has his sights set on a championship this season. With crew chief Steve "Big Guy" Helwig providing his chassis knowledge, the Goulds Pumps Team will be among the favorites at every track.
"We only made a couple of changes to our team this season," McLaughlin said. "I felt like we already had one of the best teams in the garage and the additions will only help us."
In addition to McLaughlin's familiarity to the track, he will have one more positive on his side. His sponsor, Goulds Pumps will be entertaining over 400 customers in the hospitality village before the race. These customers would like nothing more than to see McLaughlin end up in Victory Lane.
"I have the best sponsor in the world," McLaughlin said. "It's really a great feeling to visit the Goulds Pumps tent on race morning and see the excitement in their eyes. Outside of climbing in the car for battle, visiting with the Goulds Pumps folks is the best part of my job."
With all those fans in the stands and a great race car underneath him, don't bet against Mike "Magic Shoes" McLaughlin at New Hampshire International Speedway this weekend, as race fans know, anything can happen at "The Magic Mile" when the green flag drops.
