LOUDON, N.H. (May 7, 1999) Quotes from selected drivers Friday following Bud Pole Award Qualifying for Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division New Hampshire 200: JEFF GREEN No. 33 Kleenex Chevrolet "When you've got a car to drive like this Kleenex Chevrolet Monte Carlo, it makes it easy. I told the guys that if it stuck the first lap, it'd stick both laps and it did. I'm trying to re-gain a little exposure and a little more confidence, so this is the way to do it. They said we'd be right on when we unloaded off the truck, and they were right. The car's been good all day. I told the guys that I'd take an 80 (29.80-second lap) right now and go with it. I never thought we'd be that quick (29.609). If I can just talk these guys into following me all day (tomorrow), we'll be okay. But my crew chief said we have an awesome race set-up.
"You know if it's (qualifying lap) good, but you don't know if it's excellent like it was today. Between a sixty and an eighty like it was in practice -- you really don't know the difference. You know that you got through that corner good, but it's hard to tell. As far as being that fast, I never knew it until they told me on the radio."
DALE EARNHARDT JR. No. 3 ACDelco Chevrolet "We're trying to improve in every way we can here. We came here last year. Struggled just a little bit in qualifying. We've come back with the same set-up, but with a little bit better team, and hopefully a better driver. Maybe that'll make the difference. I don't think the weather conditions have made any difference in the qualifying. The track is in real, real good condition with the improvements they've made. The corners seem to be holding up fine and I really like the track. I think everybody else does, too."
RANDY LaJOIE No. 1 Bob Evans Chevrolet "We've been having a little steering box trouble on this brand new car. That might have hurt us a little bit. But we have a good car. I think we can have a good day tomorrow if nobody runs into us and we don't run into anybody."
JASON KELLER No. 57 Fleming Team Chevrolet "Our practice times were just about as fast as our qualifying time. We're close to the front, and at least I laid down something early to give these guys something to think about. I love this place. It's flat and fast. I like it a lot. All we need is a good top-10 starting space for tomorrow."
MATT KENSETH No. 17 DeWalt Chevrolet "We're not doing very good and we have to make quite a few changes on this car. I think we'll qualify okay -- somewhere in the middle of the field -- but we need to do better than this for tomorrow."
JEFF PURVIS No. 4 Lance Snacks Chevrolet "This is a new car for us and we're trying to work on some things. A little bit more practice and this car will be good. We're just trying to make a run for it here. I messed up. The first lap I missed the corner just a little bit because I'd been loose all day. So I picked up the throttle too early because I got in too light, to be honest with you. And then the next lap I got in a little further and I back-pedaled. Going back and forth. I was off. The thing about it is that you stay on the throttle so, so long here. You're wanting to go and you can't go and if you pick up the throttle too early you're either going to push up at the other end of the corner or you're going too slow. That's what I did on my first lap. And then on my second lap, I was trying to evaluate what I did on my first lap, and screwed up my second lap."
