First Union to sponsor Nazareth race
NAZARETH, Pa. (May 1, 1998) First Union has extended its long-time support of NASCAR racing with its title sponsorship of the May 17 First Union 200 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race at Nazareth Speedway.
The May 16-17 weekend will also include a race for the Featherlite Modified Series, a NASCAR Touring Division.
First Union currently sponsors the No. 46 Team SABCO NASCAR Winston Cup Series Chevrolet driven by Morgan Shepherd. The company sponsored the First Union 400 NASCAR Winston Cup race at the North Wilkesboro Speedway from 1986 until the speedway closed following the 1996 season.
"First Union is showing a strong commitment to motor racing and motor racing fans in the Mid-Atlantic region with its sponsorship of our NASCAR weekend in May," said Scott Atherton, executive vice president/general manager of Nazareth Speedway, a one-mile five-cornered oval.
Nazareth Speedway has hosted NASCAR Busch Series race every year since 1988. Race winners have included notable drivers such as current NASCAR Winston Cup Series drivers Rick Mast, Todd Bodine and Ricky Craven; two-time defending NASCAR Busch Series champion Randy LaJoie; and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series pilot Jimmy Hensley.
"We're pleased to sponsor one of NASCAR's premier events in Pennsylvania and happy to be a part of the continued growth of motor racing," said Scott Fainor, president of First Union's Lehigh Valley and Northeastern Pennsylvania region. "It has been exciting to be associated with the growth of Nazareth Speedway, and to see the association continue to attract new customers and business opportunities for the Lehigh Valley."
Nazareth Speedway underwent major renovations in 1996-97, including an $8 million grandstand project that increased reserved seating capacity to 46,341. The new seats resulted in a record season attendance, including Nazareth Speedway's first weekend crowd of more than 60,000 fans. The 1998 schedule also includes a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on July 12.
"We're looking forward to another exciting year at Nazareth Speedway," Atherton said. "Having a sponsor like First Union is an essential part to a successful racing season."
