Compton holds on for 13th place finish at Nashville.
NASHVILLE, TN (June 8, 2002) - Nashville was another of the 7 races that required Stacy Compton to miss qualifying and practice leading up to the race in favor of working with his Winston Cup car in Pocono, PA. Former NASCAR Busch Series Champion David Green did an admirable job in practice and qualifying in Compton's absence - Qualifying 14th and posting the 11th fastest time in the final practice session. By NASCAR rules, when Compton arrived on Saturday for the race, he was forced to start last in the field.
"It's always tough setting up the car for Stacy when he's not there to give us his feedback during practice," commented Crew Chief Steve Plattenberger. "David Green did a great job and the car was fast, but Stacy has alittle different feel than Stacy and the car didn't turn well enough for Stacy's liking."
The remainder of the race was a tale of strong pit stops and hard driving as Compton quietly moved his way from 43rd place to as high as 10th, eventually finishing in 13th. Noted Compton after the race, "The guys sure do a great job guessing what I'll want in the car. Moving from last to 13th isn't a bad night, and we didn't hurt ourselves any in the points tonight. We haven't finished as strong in the last month as we did in April. I'm really looking forward to our test session in two weeks to see if we can recover some of the 'magic' we had in April."
Compton and the Kingsford/Johnsonville team came away from the race still holding the 10th position in points.
