SBC 250 to Boost Local Economy, Wisconsin Tourism
Milwaukee, Wis. (April 7, 2005) - Wisconsin, start your engines and let the race begin.
SBC Communications (NYSE: SBC) today announced the first ever involvement of SBC companies with auto racing in a multi-year lead sponsorship agreement with The Milwaukee Mile. The SBC 250 at The Milwaukee Mile will be a nationally televised NASCAR Busch Series race scheduled for Saturday, June 25.
The move builds upon a growing marketing strategy for SBC companies to position their full range of communications and entertainment products and services among key customers. Recently the company has sponsored innovative marketing promotions tied to movies, music, sports and online video gaming. The SBC 250 is the latest addition.
SBC Wisconsin President Paul La Schiazza said another factor in the company's decision to sponsor the Busch Series race at The Milwaukee Mile was the state's and Gov. Jim Doyle's strong support of racing at the track as a way to encourage Wisconsin tourism and economic development.
"Gov. Doyle has been an avid supporter of The Milwaukee Mile, and we wanted to be a partner with Wisconsin's leadership in winning valuable national exposure to NASCAR fans around the country," said La Schiazza.
"National racing events at The Milwaukee Mile have helped further economic development goals for the state," said Doyle. "In Wisconsin, NASCAR races help attract tourism dollars and bring national attention to the state and to our proud racing history." SBC 250/Add One
"As we celebrate the rich, 102 year tradition of auto racing at The Milwaukee Mile, today marks a new, exciting chapter in the history of our speedway, as we welcome SBC companies as a partner with America's Legendary Oval," said Mark Perrone, Vice President and General Manager of The Milwaukee Mile. "SBC Communications, Inc. is well-established in the Milwaukee community. We are confident our loyal race fans will benefit from all the great programs and support SBC companies are putting behind this partnership."
A near capacity crowd witnessed NASCAR driver Ron Hornaday win last year's NASCAR Busch Series event, named in honor of the late Alan Kulwicki, a NASCAR champion and Milwaukee native.
"We will continue to pay tribute to Alan Kulwicki and honor his outstanding accomplishments during our NASCAR events June 24 and 25," said Perrone.
Recognizing the increasing popularity of NASCAR across the nation, SBC companies plan to complement the sponsorship with a series of promotional activities surrounding the race, including an online sweepstakes offering prizes and tickets to the race. SBC companies are the nation's leading provider of high-speed DSL Internet service and serve more than 50 million wireless customers through 60 percent ownership of Cingular Wireless.
Taking part in this exciting announcement is veteran NASCAR Busch Series driver David Green, currently 12th in series points. "The Milwaukee Mile is truly one of my favorite race tracks," he said. "Having a great new sponsor like SBC Communications, Inc. enter the NASCAR Busch Series is not only exciting for me but for all of my competitors. I look forward to going for my first win at The Milwaukee Mile with my new Wisconsin-based sponsor on board."
