Mike Bruno and the Bruno Motorsports Team arrived at Lime Rock Park for the NASCAR Busch North Series season finale last Friday. The team had high hopes of a good race to close the season on a high note - and they succeeded by winning the Flowmaster Star of the Race Award.
Mike did not qualify his #3 Fisher Snow Plows Chevy in the top 25 in the first round of qualifying on Friday, but could have stood on his time and likely made the field, but opted to try to improve his time in second round qualifying on Saturday. Many cars attempted to qualify in the second round on Saturday, but Mike was the only driver to race his way into the show on Saturday, earning the 31st staring position.
Mike and the other Busch North drivers took the green flag at 2:30 PM on Saturday afternoon under a bright blue sky with many thousands of fans cheering them on. Pit strategy was on the minds of many of the drivers at that time.
"We wanted to pit around lap 20," Mike said. "A lot of guys came in early. We were going to try to pull a green flag stop if everybody stayed out, but it didn't work that way. We made our pit stop for fuel around lap 25, with no problems and it went good."
There were many cautions during the event, and Mike got caught up in one early, but stayed focused and on the lead lap. Then another wreck on the backstretch caused Mike to pit the #3 Fisher Snowplows Chevy again.
"I got into another altercation on the backstretch with the 54 car; pretty much a racing accident. We had to pit three or four times for that accident. After that, the car actually went pretty good. The toe out was knocked out and stuff like that, but still we managed to salvage a good finish."
The finish was good enough for Mike to earn the Flowmaster Star of the Race Award for gaining the most positions during the event.
"The way people were dropping off at the end, we finished 11th," Mike said. "Coming from 31st and getting the Flowmaster Star of the Race Award was great, we're really happy with that."
Mike and his team had more to be happy about. They came into the event outside the top twenty in the points standings. They had a goal of being a top twenty team and had their work cut out going into the final event, but their hard work paid off as they finished well enough to move into the top twenty in the final points standings at the end of the race.
"We needed to finish 12th or better to get in the top 20 in points, and we pretty much accomplished that," Mike said. "The team worked really hard to earn that, we can go to the banquet as a top twenty team now."
