MIAMI (November 4, 1999) -- Mike Garvey ran the fastest NASCAR Busch Series lap in testing for the November 13 HotWheels.com 300 at Miami. The 36-year-old driver from Muskegon, Mich., ran a lap of 149.089 mph (36.22 seconds) on Wednesday, bettering Mark Martin's day-old unofficial track record of 148.433 mph (36.38).

Garvey, driving the LaFavre Racing Chevrolet, was joined by Jeff Fuller in Joe Gibbs' Pontiac in the final test in preparation for the Nov. 11-14 weekend, which features Sunday's Pennzoil 400 presented by Kmart, the debut of NASCAR Winston Cup racing in South Florida.

"That was a great lap, and now we need to do it when it counts," said Garvey. "We've had a little trouble with our Busch car this year, but we made a few changes on it for the Miami test and the car ran perfect on old tires. Then we put stickers on it and simulated a qualifying run, and it went pretty fast. We're real excited about our chances about coming back next week."

A veteran of NASCAR All Pro competition, Garvey finished fourth in the 1999 ASA point standings, winning four races in a car fielded by LaFavre Racing.

The next cars to drive on the 1.5-mile state-of-the-art Speedway will be the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, in an 11 a.m. -- 4 p.m. practice on Thursday, Nov. 11. Qualifying for both the NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series will be held on Friday. The HotWheels.com 300 at Miami takes the green flag at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by Winston Cup "Happy Hour" final practice. The Pennzoil 400 presented by Kmart is set for a 12:30 p.m. start on Sunday, Nov. 14.

A limited number of grandstand seats are still available for the Pennzoil 400 presented by Kmart and the HotWheels.com 300 at Miami. Two-event packages start at $75. Also on sale are reserved recreational vehicle locations. To place credit card ticket orders, call (305) 230-RACE.
