Handling Problems Cause Rookie To Struggle To A 28th Place Finish
Memphis, TN - Willie Allen turned several heads this past weekend at the NASCAR Busch Series Sam's Town 250 in Memphis. The rookie driver qualified the #14 Josh Turner/Nashville Music City Dodge 4th in his NASCAR Busch Series debut, turning a lap time of 22.820 seconds. This unbelievable effort was the talk of the garage and all eyes were on the Tennessee native. Driving for the team of FitzBradshaw Racing in a one race deal, Allen felt great after the qualifying effort . "I was very excited about our qualifying run," said Allen. "I knew we had a pretty good car after we made our mock qualifying runs in practice."
Once the green flag dropped, Allen ran in the top ten for 30 or 40 laps until handling problems began to plaque the car. "The car started picking up a push in the front end and we started loosing positions. We believe the right front spring might have been coil binding." A caution on lap 148 allowed the rookie to improve his track position to third but a loose hood pin was noticed by NASCAR and Allen was forced to the pits. Allen returned to the track and began working his way through the field avoiding several wrecks happening right in front of him. Allen was able to stay clear of any trouble until lap 192. An accident in turn one caused Allen to be sandwiched between the #90 of Stephen Leicht and the #64 of Steve Wallace. Damage was caused to the front and rear of Allen's #14 Dodge, but he continued on, making the most he could out of the day's troubles. "We were just never able to get a good handle on the car." Allen finished his NASCAR Busch Series debut in the 28th spot.
"I want to thank the entire FitzBradshaw Racing organization for giving me the opportunity to race in the NASCAR Busch Series. They are a great team and I look forward to any opportunity we may have together in the future. A big thanks also to my sponsors Josh Turner and Nashville Music City. Their continued support of my career is very appreciated."
