LAS VEGAS - (March 1, 2001) - Teamwork is the key word for the Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR Busch Series teams this season. With veteran drivers Mike McLaughlin and Jeff Purvis piloting the #18 and #20 Pontiac's, hopes are high for a strong season. Their dedication to teamwork was evident from the drop of the green flag in Daytona Beach. McLaughlin and Purvis worked together in the draft as if they had been teammates for years, despite the fact McLaughlin had joined the team only 10 days earlier. McLaughlin helped Purvis to a near win, before a late race incident collected the #18 MBNA Pontiac of Purvis.
The two will work together again this weekend in the Sam's Town 300 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The goal is to bring team owner, Joe Gibbs, a Busch Series win. With crew chief's Doug Richert (Purvis) and Tim Shutt (McLaughlin) calling the shots, both teams will be among the favorites when the green flag drops on Saturday afternoon.
IMPROVED START: Both Mike McLaughlin and Jeff Purvis are off to improved starts from the 2000-racing season. McLaughlin stands in 7th place and Purvis in 11th place after 2 races. Last year after 2 races, McLaughlin was in 14th and Purvis in 39th.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Max McLaughlin, son of Mike and Katie McLaughlin celebrated his 1st birthday this week. Max was born on February 29th last year, just one day before McLaughlin left for the Las Vegas race.
SPONSORSHIP: Joe Gibbs Racing is continuing it's search for a major sponsor for the # 20 Pontiac of Mike McLaughlin. McLaughlin opened the season with a strong 6th place finish in Daytona Beach and followed it up in Rockingham by running in the 3rd position before a pit road penalty dropped the team down one lap.
