Laton's condition continues to improve

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Aug. 19, 1998) Part-time NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division driver Gary Laton is listed in good condition Wednesday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital as he continues to recover from injuries he suffered in an accident during Bud Pole Qualifying last Thursday for last Saturday's Pepsi 200 presented by DeVilbiss at Michigan Speedway in Brooklyn. Laton, whose family owns Concord Motorsport Park in Concord, N.C., was moved to a private room earlier this week at the facility where he was airlifted following the hard crash of his No. 46 Tampico Chevrolet in Turn 2 at Michigan. Dwight Davies, sales manager for Concord Motorsport Park, said the tracheotomy tube that has been helping Laton breathe normally since the accident is expected to be removed today. A CT scan was negative and doctors have been pleased with Laton's progress, Davies said. Davies added that Laton is up and walking around, but is still "battered and bruised" from the accident. The hope is that Laton can return home to North Carolina as early as this weekend.
