LAS VEGAS, Nev. (March 14, 1997) Driver quotes from top Busch Pole qualifiers for Sunday's inaugural Las Vegas 300 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Jeff Green No. 8 Diamond Ridge Chevrolet
"I think you'll see both these white cars up front Sunday. We've had great cars every week. It's not just this week. All the credit goes to the team. They've really put a good car together. This has been a fast ca off the truck since we unloaded, so hopefully we can carry on Sunday.
"I knew Elliott would be great. He's always got three or four tenths somewhere. He pulls it out when he qualifies, but hopefully we'll be the first two on Sunday, too.
"This track is going to be super. You can run two or three wide. I hope we don't have to but it's got a lot of passing area.
"I like to go out last, but it's hard when Elliott put down a good lap like he did. Elliott is very eager to go fast. It was going to be a tough job to beat him. I tried as hard as I could, and we beat him by a little bit. We've got a great program going. I think it'll show in the race, too. I think it will be a great race."
Elliott Sadler No. 29 Diamond Ridge Chevrolet
"I didn't think we were going to run that fast. We haven't run that fast all day. We threw a lot of springs and shocks in there and made a lot of adjustments just before qualifying and it paid off. I made a pretty good lap. I was a little worried about Jeff, but I'll share the front row with him. It's a mile and a half track, but actually it's just an oversized short track. The corners are real flat and we can run our short track setup here. It's the smoothest race track I've ever been on, and everybody here treats you with a lot of class. It's a beautiful track, and I'm just looking forward to racing here Sunday.
"We gained about three and a half tenths from practice. That's pretty normal for these guys. We don't show everything we have in practice. We made a lot of good adjustments for qualifying and got in a real good lap. I think maybe I could run a better lap if I got back out there. We messed up a little bit going into turn three. I didn't drive it in as hard as I would have liked, but it's OK so far."
Joe Nemechek No. 87 BellSouth Chevrolet
"That was a pretty flawless lap. We didn't have much more to put on the table. I'll take it. My hat's off to all my guys. They built this Monte Carlo pretty quick. Our combination is between Richmond, Homestead and New Hampshire (track set up for Las Vegas). All our setups for those three tracks have always been the same, and it's been fast since we unloaded here. We raced this car at Atlanta and we finished fifth with it down there."
Hermie Sadler No. 1 DeWalt Tools Chevrolet
"We changed motors after practice this morning. We though we might could pick it up a little bit and we did. These guys are running good laps, but we're happy and I think we'll be pretty good in the race. We had a good run in practice, and we felt like we could improve it a little bit. We didn't quite get on the front row, but we've still got a good starting spot."
Randy LaJoie No. 74 FINA Chevrolet LaJoie crashed during his qualifying attempt, as did Steve Park who followed him onto the track.
"I tried a little too hard and backed it into the wall. We got old Ellie Mae out of the truck. She's a good race car. She's a great backup. It seems like every time we bring her out of the truck, we win, and now she's coming to Vegas. I didn't lift, and you can't do that here. That's why we're using our backup Chevy now. This isn't Daytona. It would have been a great lap if I had made it, but I didn't make it. It was a mistake on my part. We've got another good race car sitting here ready to go.
"It seems like I've been starting in the back a lot lately, but we usually work our way back to the front. We'll have some good pit stops and get up there. We'll be fine. I was just trying too hard today. I guess I thought I was at Daytona or Atlanta and just didn't lift soon enough. I messed up a good car. I wasn't smiling right after I wrecked, but what can you do? There's nothing I can do about it now. We had a shot at the pole, and we were going for it."
