Wallace Is Leaving Las Vegas with a 23rd-place Finish
LAS VEGAS (March 12) -- Stacker 2 Racing driver Kenny Wallace had his most difficult race of the season and finished 23rd in the Sam's Town 300 on Saturday.
"We will go back to the shop and do everything we need to do to make the car better," Wallace said. "I am optimistic for next week's race in Atlanta. We ran sixth there last year. The good news is this finish did not take us out of the championship hunt. The standings are so bunched up that I'm less than 100 points from sixth place."
After starting 14th, Wallace dropped in the running order due to poor handling conditions. Wallace was forced to pit when the first caution came out on lap five. After the pit crew dropped the track bar, Wallace restarted the race in the 35th position.
By lap 32 Wallace had gone one lap down to the leader. When a caution period began on lap 40, major adjustments were made to the car. The crew raised the track bar, made a major air-pressure adjustment and took rubber out of the left rear spring.
This allowed the car to handle the best it had all day, and on lap 51 Wallace was able to get the lucky dog pass. After a gas-and-go under caution, Wallace restarted the race on the tail end of the lead lap in the 26th position.
Unfortunately, these conditions did not last long, and the car started to push again. Another major air pressure adjustment was made under caution, but this did not help the handling of the car.
By lap 100, Wallace was running in the 18th position. When another caution period began on lap 109, major adjustments were made.
After barely avoiding a wreck, the car became extremely loose, and by lap 148 Wallace went a lap down to the leader.
Wallace continued to drive the car to the best of his ability and finished the race in the 23rd position, one lap down to the leaders.
