KLUEVER ENJOYS TRIP TO SLINGER DESPITE 19TH-PLACE FINISH

CONCORD, N.C. -- Todd Kluever returned to his home state of Wisconsin Tuesday to compete in the Miller Lite Nationals at Slinger Super Speedway. The 250-lap late model race is one of the most exciting races held in the Midwest each year and many NASCAR drivers from the area make the trip home for this event.

Kluever qualified ninth and ran very well in the first half of the race. He was up to third when he was involved in an incident with Dick Trickle which knocked him out of the race with about 85 laps to go. Kluever's Roush Racing teammate Matt Kenseth won the race.

"It was a good night and we were having a lot of fun," Kluever said. "We had a pretty strong car in the second half and there was a car outside of me who got in the back of the #99 car (Trickle) and knocked him into the frontstretch wall. When he tried to cut back down to get to the bottom, I was already there. Our wheels made contact and I think it broke the steering rack, but I was having a ball out there."

The race at Slinger was a good way for Kluever to prepare for another short-track race this weekend when the Busch Series returns to Martinsville Speedway for the first time since 1994. Kluever finished second there in the fall truck race last year, and hopes to get a solid finish in his No. 06 3M Ford Fusion.

"After racing on a quarter-mile track with 24 cars last night at Slinger it might make running a half-mile with 43 cars at Martinsville a little better," Kluever said. "It was great to race near home, but now I'm ready to get back to work and hopefully run as well as I did the last time I was at Martinsville."
