Menard To Start Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series United Way 300 From the Ninth Row After Qualifying at Kansas Speedway
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Friday, Oct. 7, 2005) -- Paul Menard and the #11 Menards/Splash Chevrolet of Dale Earnhardt, Inc., will start Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series United Way 300 from the inside of the ninth row after qualifying this afternoon on the Kansas Speedway mile-and-a-half tri-oval.
The 25-year-old from Eau Claire, Wis., who earned his first career Busch series pole here last year, clocked a fast qualifying lap today of 176.615 mph (30.575 seconds) to put him 17th among 54 car-and-driver combinations attempting to make Saturday's 43-car starting grid.
Defending series champion Martin Truex, Jr., earned the pole for Saturday's 200-lap, 300-mile main event.
Race time is 1 p.m. local time (2 p.m. EDT) with the NBC television network providing the live coverage.
"Despite where we are on the starting grid, I think the Menards/Splash Chevrolet was pretty good for qualifying, actually. We were a touch loose in the center, but other than that it was a pretty straightforward run. We weren't so great right off the truck this morning, but (crew chief) Dan Stillman and the boys worked and worked and we made it a good race car. It wasn't bad for qualifying, either. I actually thought maybe we'd run faster than we did. I think we'll be in good shape for tomorrow. We've got (sponsor) Splash (windshield wiper fluid maker) on the hood this weekend, and every time we do, we seem to get a good result. So we're hoping that'll be the case again, tomorrow."
