Johnny Sauter in the no. 2 ACDelco Chevrolet was the highest qualifying Raybestos® rookie at Kansas.
"It was more than I ever anticipated that we were going to do. We were 28th or so this morning but we were working on race runs. We went to go make a qualifying run and got cut off by a car so we didn't know what we really had. It turns out we bottomed out on the second lap otherwise I think we would probably have had a little better lap. But I'll take a top-10 because it's been about two months since we're been in the top-10 qualifying. This is the first time I've been at Kansas and we spent the morning in race trim. We put some springs in it to go qualify and taped it up. I knew I was going to have a pretty good lap in qualifying. I just wished we didn't bottom out on the second lap because it probably would have been better."
DID THE WEATHER THROW YOU A CURVE?
"Not really. We adjusted to it. We knew it was going to get hotter and obviously get tighter. We compensated for it or what we thought would compensate for it. It turned out to be a decent lap."
IS THIS TRACK A LOT LIKE CHICAGOLAND SPEEDWAY?
"I compare it to Chicago but I also compare it to California. I like these tracks."
DID YOU THINK YOU WOULD QUALIFY THIS WELL?
"I was surprised. This morning we were 28th in practice but I only made one lap on a qualifying run so I thought 'Okay, I'm in trouble.' I thought I could speak it in the top-15. We needed a good qualifying run."
SHANE HMIEL, NO. 47 MIKE'S HARD CRANBERRY CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED NINTH.
"That is a good lap for us. The track got 34 degrees hotter and we ran a half-tenth faster. That's exciting and I'm excited. I don't know where that will put us but I think it will be a good day for us. The top-15 is where I'd like to be. I think that could happen. It just depends on how many people back their stuff up."
CASEY MEARS, PHILLIPS 66 KANSAS JAYHAWKS DODGE, QUALIFIED 13TH.
It wasn't bad. Right now we're still in the top-10 so that's good. It's a lot slower than what we wanted to run but fortunately it looks like a lot of guys are. The track is kind of falling off a little bit. We kind of knew from testing here that in the heat of the day the track loosened up a little bit but we were so good this morning we just didn't want to change something and then say we made a mistake afterwards. I'm pretty pleased with it. We're up there toward the top half of the grid so far so hopefully we'll stay there. I think from testing here we had a pretty good race car in race trim. I'm looking forward to having a good clean weekend. Hopefully we can stay out of trouble, have a good clean race and get all the laps in."
