CHARLOTTE, N.C., (Oct. 3, 2001)– Saturday's Little Trees 300 NASCAR Busch Grand National Series event at Lowe's Motor Speedway is no ordinary race for driver Jimmy Spencer and the #1 Yellow Racing Team. Spencer and Team Yellow Racing have dedicated the 200-lap affair to the memory of the heroes of United Airlines Flight 93. All 45 people aboard the flight died when it went down in Shanksville, Pa., on Sept. 11.
On Monday, the driver for #1 Yellow Racing announced that Spencer Motor Ventures, Phoenix Racing and Team Yellow Racing agreed to honor the heroes of Flight 93 with a special paint scheme on the #1 Yellow Racing Chevrolet this weekend at 1.5-mile oval. In addition to the paint scheme, a Flight 93 fund was created and all of Phoenix Racing's winnings from Saturday's race will be donated to that fund.
Spencer, a Berwick, Pa. native, visited the television programs RPM2nite and Totally NASCAR Tuesday afternoon to raise money and awareness for the Flight 93 fund. The following are quotes taken from both conversations.
"I can't thank James Finch (#1 Phoenix Racing car owner) and Yellow enough. When I approached them to help out with this project, they really stepped up to the plate. The idea is to raise money for the family members of the Flight 93 victims. I really think that what those passengers did that day saved a lot of lives and we want to thank them somehow.
"We were stranded in Houston after the attacks on Sept. 11. On the way home, my associate Jim Melvin and I kept hearing about all the tragedies that were happening. Jim came up with the idea that we could bring something positive to this situation. Yellow has donated their time and race car to the cause this weekend.
"We all know there were innocent victims on this flight. Those people could have been any of us. I hope that Americans never again have to suffer what those guys and gals went through. We're trying to raise as much money as we can for the families left behind. We hope that it will help them with college educations, mortgages or anything else that they might need. A lot of kids are without a mother, father, brother or sister right now.
"We have received donations to our Flight 93 program this week from all across the country. We have already raised a lot of money. It's awesome to think that these NASCAR fans have supported this program as much as they have."
