WATKINS GLEN, NY --- For the first 23 years of his driving career, Jeff Purvis built an unmatched resume driving on the dirt tracks across the country. Purvis was nearly unbeatable in racking up over 350 feature wins. The one common denominator in all those wins were the shape of the racetracks, They were all oval racing facilities. Not one single time did the Clarksville, TN native race a car on a road course until he entered Busch Grand Series full-time in 1996.
"Watkins Glen is the only road course I have ever been on in my life, unless you count the local go-cart track here in Clarksville," Purvis joked. "To say road courses and I are strangers would be a real solid fact."
Despite the lack of experience on road courses, Purvis refuses to give in to the famed road course. Purvis spent a day earlier this month testing the Porter-Cable Pontiac at Watkins Glen and came away with times faster than he has ever turned on the 2.45-mile road course.
"We had a real good test, I learned a lot of new things about road racing." Purvis said. "We had the onboard computer system and it showed me where I was losing all of my time and gave us a chance to work on those areas."
Purvis said his main problem area was the chicane area. Purvis was bringing too much speed into the turns, which led to problems being able to drive away from the area.
"If my crew chief (Doug Richert) can get me to enter into that area a little more under control, then maybe we can score a top-ten finish this weekend."
Jeff Purvis and the Porter-Cable Racing Team will take to the track on Friday for practice leading up to the Lysol 200 on Sunday afternoon.
By the way, If you happen to see a grown man down at the go-cart track in Clarksville this week, take a look it could be Jeff Purvis gearing up for the road course battle this weekend! Every bit of experience helps.
