Quotes from Mike McLaughlin, 1997 Busch Series Most Popular Driver:
"Up until the last two years, I had built a pretty solid record at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Last year, we were in the top-ten and the handling disappeared over the last 20 laps, dropping us to 18th. Hopefully this year we will be able to make the Goulds Pumps Chevrolet handle for all 200 laps and record a solid finish."
"We really enjoy racing here at I.R.P. With the Winston Cup Series over at the Brickyard and the NASCAR Busch Series and Craftsmen Truck Series here, all the eyes of racing seem to be focused on Indianapolis. To win one of these three races this weekend is special for all NASCAR drivers. I believe we will have a car capable of winning on Friday night, it will take some luck and a good qualifying effort, but we can win here."
ü Did You Know? Mike McLaughlin has two wins at IRP in the NASCAR Modified Series. The two wins came in his only two starts here in a modified.
ü McLaughlin and Cicci-Welliver Racing teammate Tim Fedewa participated in a convertible stock car match race on Tuesday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Fedewa won the first two races by inches and McLaughlin won the final race when Fedewa spun in turn four.
ü McLaughlin recorded finishes of 3rd, 3rd and 2nd here in his first three NASCAR Busch Series starts. The last two seasons have seen finishes of 37th with an accident and 18th. McLaughlin also started on the outside pole in 1997, his only top-ten start at IRP in the NASCAR Busch Series.
