HUFFMAN SET TO BEGIN 'SAILORIZATION' WITH U.S. NAVY
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (September 12, 2006) -- During the NASCAR Busch Series' first off weekend in 16 weeks, Shane Huffman, driver of the No. 88 Navy Accelerate Your Life Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS will not kick back and relax like many of his fellow drivers. Instead, Huffman will use his downtime to make the first of several upcoming trips to acclimate him to the life of a sailor in the U.S. Navy.
On Wednesday, Huffman and several of his No. 88 team members, including crew chief Wes Ward, will fly up to Norfolk, Va., where they will board a Navy transport plane that will take them to land on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. They will spend the next day and a half touring the carrier to get a feel for what life is like for sailors at sea.
Several weeks later Huffman will again spend his off weekend going through the sailorization process. On Oct. 5-6, he will undergo a two-day naval service training session at the Recruit Training Command at Naval Station Great Lakes in Great Lakes, Ill. While there, Huffman will get accustomed to what recruits go through to become seamen. He will complete the SEAL Challenge, the swim test SEAL hopefuls must take to qualify for the program, visit the Confidence Chamber and witness shipboard fire fighting techniques.
Huffman will then round out October with an overnight trip aboard a submarine on Oct. 17-18 with members of his No. 88 Navy JR Motorsports team.
"It's inspiring to see all that the sailors do to defend our country," Huffman said. "I feel a great sense of pride when I strap into the Navy Chevrolet and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to experience firsthand what our sailors go through every day on the trips the Navy has scheduled for me in the next month."
