MIKE MCLAUGHLIN No. 34 Royal Oak Chevrolet)

"We've been a little bit loose. We made an adjustment that helped us in qualifying. Steve's done an excellent job this year. He's given us all something to shoot for. I knew what he ran, and I didn't know if we could beat him or not. Loose is good for qualifying, and our car was a little loose. That was as quick as we ran all day. We're looking for a good race on Sunday. We've got a decent car, and I think we can make it a little better for the race. I'd like to come out of here with a good finish for our sponsor. Royal Oak has been with us for two years, and they won't be back next year. It would be nice to leave on a good note."

STEVE PARK No. ACDelco Chevrolet

"The guys have been working hard, and this is our last hoorah together, so it means a lot to me. I didn't know if that lap was good enough for the pole, but at this time of day, it's a pretty competitive lap. It's been a remarkable year. I've had a lot of fun. The motors have been running great. It didn't feel like it was going fast down the straightaways, but when you run so fast through the corners, it makes the straightaway speeds feel slower. Testing here really helped. With the emphasis going into this race, we wanted to spend as much time down here as we could. We've never run here before, and we really need to gain some points and move up to second in the standings. My hat's off to these guys. They've done a great job. The car's been driving good, and I think we're really going to race good. We made a few changes before qualifying, and I think we'll be in good shape on Sunday. It's a big deal to finish first, but we're going to have to settle for second this year. We'll need a good run to do that. We wanted to win the championship and we didn't give up on that until it was mathematically impossible. Now all we've got left is to try for second. We'll go at it with all we've got. We want to try to force Todd (Bodine) to race. If we win, he's got to finish in the top five or six, and if we finish in the top five, he's got to finish in the top 10. We're both going to be racing. Todd is a great competitor. He's done a great job all year long. It's going to be fun on Sunday. The way the track's been changing, it's going to be tricky. It's going to be a guessing game for the race. Pit stops and track position will be key. The guys with the best pit stops will finish up front."

JOE NEMECHEK No. 87 BellSouth Mobility Chevrolet

"That 3 car is pretty good, and I figured he'd beat us. We were decent, but it just didn't go like it did in practice. I don't know if we did something to the car or if it was just the wind blowing. It was just slower. We thought we could run at least a 36.50 and we ran a 36.70. We'll take it. We're in the show, and I think we've got a pretty awesome setup. We're looking forward to Sunday. The lap just felt slow. We gave up something somewhere. The wind really started blowing, so maybe that was it. We'll blame it on the wind anyway."

JASON KELLER No. 57 Slim Jim Chevrolet

"I'm as happy as I can be. The lap felt real good and free. The track is a lot easier to drive than it was here last year. That's why I'm up front."

TIM FEDEWA No. 33 Kleenex Chevrolet

"We've been running pretty good all week. We tested last week here and that really helped us out. We want to have a good run to end the season. We've worked hard all year and haven't been able to make it to victory circle. We could care less about qualifying. I want to run good in that race on Sunday. That's our main objective. We're going to try to get it dialed in for Sunday now."

JIMMY SPENCER No. 20 Zippo Chevrolet

"It wasn't a bad lap, but it wasn't what we needed for the pole. The car was real good off the trailer. We were fast in practice, and I think we're going to be a lot better in the race setup. Those Hoosier tires hurt us a little bit. We went out early and those other cars had been out there practicing and put some of that other rubber down. Towards the end of the field, I knew it would get faster because the Goodyear rubber got back on the track. We ended up in the top 10 and we've been doing that regularly on the Busch Series. I think we're going to have a good car on Sunday. We've only run nine races in the Zippo Chevrolet, so we've won two of nine this season. It would be nice to win this one, but that's not the top priority. We want to do the best we can. Sometimes I wish this was Winston Cup. We won at Charlotte and Bristol and ran well at Las Vegas. Those are high profile tracks, and we've been in the top five consistently in the Busch Series. I hope we can do that again here. We're going to run 10 Busch races again next year with Zippo and Chevrolet, so we're excited about that." "I ran here last year and it was a different type of race track. It was very unforgiving. You had to drive right against the wall, and there was no grip on the outside of the race track. There's a little bit of grip here now. There's a lot more angle in the corners, so you can angle in and start gradually cutting. Last year, you had to go straight to the corner and then cut. It's pretty hard to get a car setup like that. I think it's going to be a lot better racing. It reminds me a lot of New Hampshire, but it's a lot bigger. It really reminds me of Indianapolis. You really need to stay on the bottom of the track. If you can keep your car on the bottom getting off the corners, you're going to have a good day."

GREG SACKS No. 49 WCW Chevrolet

"We lost about a tenth and a half from practice. I felt like it we ran pretty solid laps. They were both about the same speed. That's all I had. I don't know what I could do different to get any more. Maybe we needed a little different gear or something. I'm not sure. We've got a pretty good headwind here. Our rpm's seem to be a little down from practice. A lot of people thought I've been running a lot of laps here since I've got a drivers school. Everybody was surprised to hear that yesterday was the first time I've seen the new track. My school doesn't open until December. They wouldn't let us back out on the track until then. They were really concerned with the asphalt. They wanted to get as much curing time as possible. It's hold up well so far. This track is day and night different from last year. It's a total re-configuration of the track. There's no comparison between last year and this year. I loved the old track, but this is fast and we'll have to see how it goes in the race. I think there's going to be a lot of rooting and gouging. The guy who can run on the bottom of the track all day is going to be the guy who's going to win. I made a 30-lap run this morning on 40-lap tires. We ran consistently on the bottom, so I feel pretty good about our chances on Sunday."

SCOTT LAGASSE No. 22 Pest Offense Chevrolet

"We've been chasing it all day. We'd been tight and it was still tight in qualifying. We made some big changes just before we went out, but it was still a little tight probably 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. I ran a SuperTruck here in '96, and we ran good. I liked the old configuration, but they did an excellent job on this new configuration. It's flat and it's probably a lot safer. I think when we get the push out of it, we'll go quick and we'll probably be a lot more competitive."

DALE EARNHARDT JR. 31 Wrangler Chevrolet

"We were loose out there for some reason. We set it up to be a little on the tight side because that's the way you get around here fast. The other cars running this week put down some nasty rubber. We can't run on it. We'll have to see how we are for the race. These other guys keep running, it's going to keep messing us up."


"We've been loose all day, and we were loose qualifying. We've got a good car for the race. We ended up in the top 28, so we're ready to go racing on Sunday. When you've wrecked as much as I have in practice getting ready to qualify, it just doesn't pay to go all out in qualifying. I always race better than I qualify, so I might just have to go to the wall Sunday. The ticket here is getting to the white line (on bottom of track). We've been there in practice. It got away from us a little bit. Somebody must have moved the line in qualifying. We've got two corners to screw up in here this year. Last year, we had four. It's still a neat little track. Right now, it's only a one-groove track. I don't think you're going to see a whole lot of side-by-side racing, but we'll see. I think this is the best shot we'll have to end the year on a high note. I've been pretty relaxed in the car all year. Whatever the car gives you is what you've got. If I've got a good race car Sunday, I'm going to the front. That's pretty much the way I've been all year. In the last three races, I haven't had a good race car. I couldn't do a whole lot."
