JOHNNY BENSON REUNITED WITH BACE FOR JIFFY LUBE MIAMI 300 AT HOMESTEAD
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Nov. 11, 1998) - Johnny Benson will make a one-race return to the NASCAR Busch Series this weekend (Nov. 13-15), driving the StaffAmerica Chevrolet in the Jiffy Lube Miami 300 at the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex.
The Grand Rapids, Mich., driver will be reunited with BACE Motorsports for the event, in only his third NASCAR Busch Series start since he captured the 1995 championship. Benson began a run of three consecutive championships for BACE Motorsports, with his replacement, Randy LaJoie, capturing the 1996 and 1997 titles. Benson and LaJoie join Tim Fedewa to give BACE a solid three-car entry for the 1998 season finale.
Benson is one of 10 NASCAR Winston Cup regulars entered in the Jiffy Lube Miami 300. He joins defending race winner Joe Nemechek, Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, Jimmy Spencer, Ken Schrader, Dick Trickle, Kevin Lepage, Morgan Shepherd and Rich Bickle from NASCAR's premier division.
Benson recently completed his first season driving for Roush Racing, finishing 20th in the final NASCAR Winston Cup standings. He recorded three top-five and 10 top-10 finishes driving the Cheerios Ford, including a career-best fourth place showing at Las Vegas.
After capturing rookie of the year and championship honors in both the American Speed Association and the NASCAR Busch Series, the second generation driver moved up to NASCAR Winston Cup competition in 1996. Driving the Bahari Racing Pennzoil Pontiac, Benson challenged for the victory in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis during his Rookie of the Year campaign. He improved 10 positions in the standings to finish 11th in the final points in 1997, placing seventh in the Brickyard 400.
The Jiffy Lube Miami 300 weekend also includes action for two other NASCAR divisions. The NASCAR Slim Jim All-Pro Series will compete in the Greased Lightning 150 Saturday at 1:15 p.m., while the Pennzoil 50 for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series will follow the Jiffy Lube Miami 300.
Practice for all three divisions begins Friday, Nov. 13, at 9 a.m. Bud Pole qualifying to determine the top 25 starting positions for the Jiffy Lube Miami 300 will be held at 2:30 p.m., with final qualifying Saturday at noon. The fourth annual Jiffy Lube Miami 300 will take the green flag at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
A limited number of grandstand seats are still available for the race weekend. Advance ticket buyers are also eligible to reserve tickets for Homestead's inaugural NASCAR Winston Cup race, the 1999 Jiffy Lube Miami 400.
