Concord, NC-- Ricky Hendrick announced on Thursday that he will be stepping out of his No. 5 Busch Series ride. Hendrick, continuing to suffer lingering effects from his shoulder injury at Las Vegas in March. He underwent surgey and missed a number of events.

"After a lot of soul searching, I've decided to step away from the driver's seat to pursue other opportunites within Hendrick Motorsports. I love this team and I love this sport but I am not able to perform at a level that I'm comfortable with."

At the time of his injury, Ron Hornaday filled Hendrick's seat prior to his return. David Green has been named as the interim driver for the duration of the 2002 season. Green was the 1994 Busch Series Champion and had been serving as a spotter for the majority of this season.
