NAZARETH, PA --- Joe Gibbs Racing Busch Series Crew Chief Tim Shutt will make his first visit to his home state of Pennsylvania this weekend as a NASCAR Busch Series crew chief. The 32-year old, Gettysburg, PA native was named crew chief for the # 20 unsponsored race team and driver Mike McLaughlin prior to the start of the 2001 season. Shutt has proven his worth by placing McLaughlin in fifth place in the Busch Series Point Standings entering the Nazareth race. The highlight of the season came in April, when McLaughlin captured the checkered flag at Talladega Superspeedway.
Shutt began his motorsports career on the dirt tracks of Pennsylvania driving sprint cars across the state. In 1992, Shutt relocated to Indianapolis where he worked until moving to North Carolina in 1997. After three years of hard work in the Craftsman Truck Series, Shutt joined Joe Gibbs Racing as a car chief and was promoted to crew chief prior to the start of the 2001 season.
Shutt and the # 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Team will begin practice at The Nazareth Speedway on Saturday. Nothing would please McLaughlin more than to deliver a home state win for his friend Tim Shutt.
With the passing of legendary NASCAR Modified team owner Lenny Boehler on Sunday, Mike McLaughlin sends his condolences to the family. McLaughlin drove for Boehler in 1984 and 1985. McLaughlin won many races with Boehler and finished runner-up in the point's race to the late Richie Evans.
Tires: McLaughlin feels the Goodyear tires will be important this weekend in Nazareth. "This is the same tire we used the last two weeks, and we have struggled to get a good balance with the race car," he said. "Hopefully we can use the tire information we learned the last two weeks and race up front on Sunday."
The Winston! All eyes will be focused on Charlotte Saturday night for the annual running of The Winston All-Star Race. McLaughlin has picked his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Tony Stewart to capture the checkered flag. McLaughlin and Stewart's crew chief, Greg Zipadelli have a long-time friendship from their days working together in the NASCAR Busch North Series and Modified Series.
