GARY GAETTI NAMED GRAND MARSHAL FOR JIFFY LUBE MIAMI 300 AT HOMESTEAD

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Nov. 10, 1998) - Chicago Cubs third baseman Gary Gaetti has been named Grand Marshal for this weekend's (Nov. 13-15) Jiffy Lube Miami 300 NASCAR Busch Series race at the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex.

Gaetti will give the command for 43 drivers to start their engines for the event, which will conclude NASCAR's historic 50th anniversary season. Gaetti will also present the trophy to the winner of the year's final event.

Gaetti will have a "rooting interest" in the 200-lap race on the 1.5-mile oval. He is one of six Major League Baseball players who co-own the Clean Shower Chevrolet driven by Bobby Hillin. The winner of the 1986 Talladega 500 in the NASCAR Winston Cup series, Hillin has a pair of career Busch Series victories. A second place finish at Dover is the highlight of his 1998 season.

Drafted in the first round of the 1979 free agent draft by the Minnesota Twins, Gaetti homered in his first major league at bat on Sept. 20, 1981. He is a four-time Gold Glove winner, and was most valuable player of the 1987 American League Championship Series. In that series, he became the first player to hit homers in his first two post-season at bats, and hit .300 for the Twins against Detroit. He also has a World Series homer to his credit, coming during the Twins victory over St. Louis in 1987.

After 14 seasons in the American League, Gaetti joined the St. Louis Cardinals in 1996, and helped lead the team to the National League Championship Series, where he hit a grand slam against Atlanta.

The Jiffy Lube Miami 300 weekend also includes action for two other NASCAR divisions. The NASCAR Slim Jim All-Pro Series will compete in the Greased Lightning 150 Saturday at 1:15 p.m., while the Pennzoil 50 for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series will follow the Jiffy Lube Miami 300.

Practice for all three divisions begins Friday, Nov. 13, at 9 a.m. Bud Pole qualifying to determine the top 25 starting positions for the Jiffy Lube Miami 300 will be held at 2:30 p.m., with final qualifying Saturday at noon. The fourth annual Jiffy Lube Miami 300 will take the green flag at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

A limited number of grandstand seats are still available for the race weekend. Advance ticket buyers are also eligible to reserve tickets for Homestead's inaugural NASCAR Winston Cup race, the 1999 Jiffy Lube Miami 400.
