Gargoyles to Sponsor Daytona NASCAR Event DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 25, 1997) -- Gargoyles Performance Eyewear has signed an agreement to become title sponsor of the Gargoyles 300 NASCAR Busch Series race at Daytona International Speedway. The $945,319 Gargoyles 300, the most lucrative and prestigious event on the NASCAR Busch Series schedule, takes the green flag at the "World Center of Racing" on Feb. 15 at 12 p.m. Beginning with the 1997 Gargoyles 300, CBS Sports will broadcast the race to a live national television audience. As part of the agreement, Gargoyles obtains "official premium sunglass" status at Daytona International Speedway. Additionally, Action Performance Company, through an agreement with Gargoyles, will produce and distribute a limited edition diecast model stock car commemorating Gargoyles' sponsorship of the race. Among the many athletes who endorse Gargoyles Performance Eyewear is seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt, who holds an event-record seven Gargoyles 300 titles. "We've had a long-standing relationship with NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt, who has endorsed and worn our glasses for years," said Doug Hauff, president of Gargoyles, Inc. "The sport enjoys immense popularity and research shows that more than 70 percent of NASCAR fans seek out and purchase specific brands associated with NASCAR. Thanks to this tremendous brand loyalty, we felt that sponsoring the race was an excellent way to further strengthen our position in the large market segment represented by NASCAR fans." Gargoyles Performance Eyewear, located in Kent, Wash., is a leading manufacturer of premium sunglasses and protective eyewear. More than two dozen NASCAR Winston Cup and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams and competitors wore Gargoyles throughout the 1996 season. Other athletes who are currently under contract to wear Gargoyles are soccer star Alexi Lalas, NBA all-star Scottie Pippen and baseball superstar Ken Griffey Jr. In addition, Gargoyles clear protective eyewear is worn exclusively on the hit TV series, "ER." "The Gargoyles 300 is not only the top race on the NASCAR Busch Series schedule, but it is one of the most significant races on the prestigious Daytona International Speedway calendar," said Greg Sullivan, International Speedway Corporation vice president of marketing. "We're delighted to add this dynamic company to our list of sponsors."
