Kevin Grubb, The Toys "R" Us kid, ready for Texas race.
Denton, TX --- (April 3, 2002) --- Kevin Grubb, driver of the Toys "R" Us Chevrolet Monte Carlo heads to the Texas Motor Speedway for Saturday's O' Reilly 300 NASCAR Busch Grand National race. Grubb will make his fourth start of the year behind the wheel of the # 54 Toys "R" Us Chevrolet, owned by Team Bristol Motorsports.
Q. It's been a whirlwind month for you, being named to drive the car in Las Vegas and then competing for the win just two races later in Bristol?
A. The last month has been crazy, I went from being an unemployed driver to three weeks later driving the Toys "R" Us Chevrolet. Since I wasn't the driver at the start of the year, we didn't have the benefit of an offseason to develop chemistry and fine-tune the race cars to fit my style. I feel real lucky to be in this position with such an exciting sponsor.
Q. Last race in Bristol, you were chasing Jeff Green for the win late in the race before a turn-one spin, how exciting was that?
A. It made me feel really good to be back up front again, competing for the win. Unfortunately I lost control of the car late in the race, but all in all we had a great race. I knew after practice that we had a good car, but I never thought we would be pushing Jeff Green for the win. We were running a car that Tony Lambert had never worked with before and I had never driven, so I was pretty excited to have run so well. Sure the spin was a heartbreaker, but all in all we had a great day.
Q. Have you been able to develop any chemistry with Tony Lambert and the team?
A. Tony and I hit it off really fast, it seems as if we have worked together for years and in reality I have only known him for a month. The guys are great and we all get along well.
With Tony, he listens to what I have to say about the car and instead of talking me out of what I am feeling, he gives me exactly what I ask for on the chassis. It's a great feeling to have when the crew chief believes in your feedback. I think the more Tony and I are around each other, the better you will see this team run.
Q. Can you talk a little about the Texas race?
A. I am so excited about racing in Texas, I hear the track is super fast and has a ton of grip. I remember racing in Atlanta when they repaved the track and it was awesome. I ran inside the top five all day and finished sixth. We are coming off of a great run in Bristol so our team feels confident about Texas.
Q. What is the next step for The Toys "R" Us Racing Team?
A. We have to continue to grow, we still have a long way to go, but the potential is there to be successful. We are becoming more organized each day and that is helping. Hopefully we can find some more good employees to work back in the shop preparing the cars. We have really good people right now, but we have to find more of the same and build our race team. All the key ingredients are in place I believe. We have an awesome crew chief in Tony Lambert and an incredible sponsor with Toys "R" Us. The future is very bright for this race team and I am very excited about being a part of the team.
Q. Good luck this weekend.
A. Thanks, I am looking forward to putting the Toys "R" Us Chevrolet up front!
