Greg Biffle overcame a cut right-front tire on lap 69, as the unscheduled pit stop put the No. 60 Ford off sequence and a lap down, to win Saturday's 200-lap Busch Series race. Biffle followed up his win last night in the Craftsman Truck Series race with his fifth Busch Series win of the 2001 season, rewriting the record book for wins by a rookie.
Biffle also won Ford's 12th Busch Series race of the season, equaling the manufacturer's best single-season win total with two races remaining on the 33-race schedule. For Roush Racing, the all-time winningest team in Busch Series history, it scored its 54th win in the series.
-98-Hot Tamales/Starter Ford Taurus (Finished 38th)
ARE YOU OK, AND WHAT HAPPENED? "First of all, I'm OK. It was a pretty hard hit. We got behind there and we didn't need to be back there anyway. We stayed out early and didn't catch the caution right and got ourselves behind and got a lap down. We got our lap back and had a fast car, but I'm not sure what happened. Mike Wallace got a little loose and kinda checked up. I haven't looked at a replay. The 26 car was on the bottom and he was a lap down, so I don't know what the deal was there. I'm not really sure what happened, but the next thing I know we're heading head-in towards the fence."
-10-Nestle Nesquik Ford Taurus (Finished 2nd) -
"Congratulations to Greg, he earned it. He got us there on the restart, and if we could have had a better restart, I think we had a chance."
IT LOOKED LIKE BEFORE THE LAST CAUTION THAT YOU WERE GAINING ON BIFFLE. "We worked on our Nesquik Ford all day and it was the best it had been all day right there at the end. It was so slick. The sun came out and it bit my car, but we were hauling at the end. Kevin gave me a great break and let me go, and it was all ours, I thought. He snookered me a little bit, and that's what he's supposed to do and that was a great job by him. It was a great job by my Nesquik guys. They did a good on pit road. I can't gain much on Kevin, though, when I finish right in front of him. It was a good day for us."
-60-Grainger Ford Taurus (Finished 1st)
"This Grainger Ford was pretty strong all day. There were a few cars that were better than us, but we had really good track position and really good pit stops. It's too bad that we got that flat tire; we got a lap down, but we were able to come back and make it up. And I'll tell you, we dug really hard and I love this Phoenix area. I'm just so excited. I just wish I was racing tomorrow."
WERE YOU WORRIED BY THE CUT TIRE? "I was really worried about the cut tire because it started tearing the right-front fender off. So, I slowed down going pit road so it wouldn't tear the fender up because I knew that aero was going to be important here for the rest of the day. Even if we got a lap down, we could have raced them back. It just worked out for us today. Kevin and Jeff Green, those guys were really strong and I just got a good start that last time. I'm really excited about our engine program and gear and body program. Everybody back at the shop is building great cars."
WERE YOU WORRIED ABOUT SPENCER? "Absolutely. I knew that Jimmy was going to be strong all day. They're taking a little bit more of a gamble on the setup with what they're choosing to race here, so it probably cost them mechanical today and it worked out for us."
-9-Gain Ford Taurus (Finished 9th)
"We ran really bad. We struggled all weekend long over here. There's something wrong with that car, I guess. We put Biffle's setup under it and we were slow. We put everything under it and it never helped it and it was never any good. We fought real hard and ended up with a ninth because Biffle helped us. Without that, we certainly would not have had a top 10. The good thing is we fought and we never quit. That was a decent finish, but we didn't run up to the level that we can or should."
-57-Albertsons Ford Taurus (Finished 6th)
"We fought all hard all day and that was about all we had. We kinda got burned on the timing of our pit stops. It seemed that by the time everything cycled around, we came back out of the pits in 15th and that really puts you on the track in 30th. We fought hard all day, but we never put ourselves in a position to capitalize."
WITH TWO RACES LEFT, DOES THIS CHANGE YOUR OUTLOOK? "We just have to stay positive. It's still a pretty heated battle for second. If we can stay positive and do that I think we'll have a decent end to the season."
